What it does
Quizzes are scored knowledge checks built from the shared question bank. An administrator builds one through a guided wizard, publishes it, assigns it to people, and reviews attempt results on the quiz's detail page.
Who it's for
Program and institution administrators create, assign, and review quizzes (template-editing permission to create/edit, assignment-management permission to assign); learners take assigned quizzes from their own My Quizzes page.
How it works
The quizzes list shows every quiz in your scope with its status. Creating one walks through four wizard steps:
Details — title, an optional code, a description, and instructions shown to the taker.
Settings — time limit, passing score, maximum attempts, and visibility switches: show score immediately (on by default), show correct answers, show feedback.
Questions — pick questions from the shared bank, set each question's points, and order them.
Security — an availability window (from/until dates) plus password and IP-allowlist fields.
Publishing. A new quiz starts as a draft. The detail page has Overview, Questions, Assignments, and Results tabs. Publish on Overview makes the quiz live — only published quizzes can be attempted. Each quiz belongs to your institution, and to its program if created from a program context.
Assigning. The Assignments tab is where a quiz reaches learners. Assign it to a person with an optional due date, with per-person overrides for attempt limit or time limit. The table tracks each person's latest attempt status and best score. Edit or remove an assignment anytime.
Results and grading. The Results tab summarizes average score, pass rate, and total attempts, and lists every attempt with status, score, pass/fail marker, and start/submission times. Automatic grading scores choice answers against a question's flagged correct answer, computes a percentage against the quiz's total points, and sets pass/fail against its passing score.
Before you start
You need template-editing permission at the program or institution scope to create or edit a quiz.
You need assignment-management permission to assign a published quiz to people.
Have at least one question ready in the shared question bank — the wizard's Questions screen pulls from there.
Do this
Open the Quizzes list (
/questions/quizzes) and select Create Quiz → you should see the Details screen of the wizard.In the wizard's Details screen, enter a title and, optionally, a code, description, and instructions, then select Next → you should see the Settings screen.
In the wizard's Settings screen, set the time limit, passing score, and maximum attempts, and choose the visibility switches you want, then select Next → you should see the Questions screen.
In the wizard's Questions screen, add questions from the shared bank, set each question's points, and order them, then select Next → you should see the Security screen.
In the wizard's Security screen, set an availability window and, if needed, a password or IP allowlist, then select Finish → you should return to the quiz's Overview tab as a draft.
On the Overview tab, select the Publish button → confirm the quiz's status changes to Published; only published quizzes can be attempted.
Open the Assignments tab and select Assign Quiz → choose a person, an optional due date, and any attempt-limit or time-limit override, then select Assign Quiz again in the dialog → you should see the person listed in the assignment table.
You're done when
✓ The quiz's status on the Overview tab shows Published.
✓ The assigned person appears in the Assignments tab's table with their due date and any overrides.
✓ The learner's My Quizzes page lists the quiz once both conditions hold.
Boundaries and limits
Creation, editing, and deletion require template-editing permission; assigning requires assignment-management permission. Learners only see a quiz once it's published and assigned to them.
Attempt-limit and time-limit overrides on an assignment take effect when that person starts an attempt, taking priority over the quiz defaults.
Password and IP-allowlist fields are saved on the quiz, but taking a quiz doesn't currently prompt for a password or block by network address; the platform records the taker's network address on each attempt instead.
Randomize-questions, randomize-choices, and questions-per-attempt settings are saved but not yet applied — learners see all questions in the order you configured.
Automatic grading only scores choice-based answers with a flagged correct answer; other answers stay ungraded, and the manual grading panel on Results doesn't yet save scores or feedback.
The Export results button on the Results tab is not yet enabled.
Deleting a quiz or an assignment is a soft delete; historical attempt data is not destroyed.
Common questions
Q: Why can't a learner see the quiz I created? A: The quiz must be published AND the learner must have an assignment for it — a draft is invisible regardless of assignments.
Q: Can I give one person extra attempts or more time? A: Yes. Edit their assignment and set a max-attempts or time-limit override; it replaces the quiz default for that person only.
Q: How is the score calculated? A: Automatic grading sums earned points from correctly answered choice questions and divides by the quiz's total points. If the quiz has a passing score, pass/fail is set by comparing against it.
Q: Can I change a quiz after publishing? A: Yes, editing reopens the wizard. Changes affect future attempts only; existing attempts are not recalculated.
