Personal Notification Preferences

Written by Medtrics

What it does

Each user controls how the platform reaches them. Pick which categories you receive, on which channels (in-app, email, push), during which hours, and whether emails arrive right away or bundled into a digest.

Who it's for

Every signed-in user — learners, faculty, coordinators, advisors, and administrators.

How it works

Preferences are personal. They only affect what you receive, and no administrator setting changes when you edit them.

Your preferences page opens with a master switch. Turning it off pauses all notifications. Turning it back on restores your previous per-category choices.

Below that, a channel matrix lists notification categories: form reminders, schedule changes, case updates, grade publishing, compliance deadlines, announcements, benefit requests, approval requests, and system notices. Toggle in-app, email, and push for each category on its own.

A dedicated section covers curriculum-related notices with its own per-type channel choices.

Quiet hours. Enable quiet hours and set a start time, end time, and timezone — for example 22:00 to 07:00. Quiet hours apply to all your notifications, not one category at a time.

Digest frequency. Choose immediate delivery, or a bundled digest sent hourly, daily, or weekly. This also applies across all your categories.

Changes take effect when you press the save button. A confirmation message appears when they are stored.

Before you start

  • Nothing to request — every signed-in user has their own preferences page; no admin permission is needed.

  • Check with your administrator first if a category or channel is missing — they may have turned it off org-wide.

  • Preferences only affect delivery to you. They never change what your institution sends overall.

Do this

  1. Open the /preferences/notifications page → the Notification Preferences page opens.

  2. To stop everything at once, turn off the switch on the All Notifications card → the description changes to say you won't receive any notifications, and the Save Preferences button becomes disabled.

  3. In the Notification Channels by Category section, toggle In-App, Email, or Push for any category row → each switch updates independently.

  4. Scroll to the curriculum notifications section for course-related notices, and set its per-type channels the same way → those toggles update independently too.

  5. On the Quiet Hours card, turn on Enable Quiet Hours, then set Start Time and End Time → the time fields appear once the switch is on.

  6. On the Email Digest card, choose a Digest Frequency — Immediate, Hourly Digest, Daily Digest, or Weekly Digest → the card shows your chosen frequency.

  7. Select Save Preferences at the bottom of the page → a confirmation toast confirms your preferences saved.

You're done when

  • ✓ The confirmation toast appears after you select Save Preferences.

  • ✓ The categories, channels, quiet hours, and digest frequency you set match what you chose.

  • ✓ If you paused everything, the All Notifications card shows the paused description and the save button is disabled until you turn it back on.

Boundaries and limits

  • Nothing saves automatically. You must press save. While all notifications are paused, the save button is disabled — unpause first, then save.

  • Quiet hours, timezone, and digest frequency are account-wide. You cannot set different quiet hours or digest schedules per category.

  • The available categories and channels are fixed by the platform. You cannot add custom categories.

  • Push toggles appear in the matrix, but push delivery also needs a device enrolled for push. Device enrollment isn't offered yet, so push selections don't produce deliveries.

  • Text-message (SMS) delivery isn't offered as a personal channel choice.

  • Your preferences control delivery to you only. Administrators separately control which types the organization sends. If an administrator disables a category, enabling it here won't bring it back.

Common questions

Q: I'm getting too much email. What should I change? A: Switch specific categories from email to in-app only, or keep email on and set digest frequency to daily or weekly.

Q: Will pausing notifications make me miss deadlines? A: Pausing stops delivery, not the underlying work. Assignments, deadlines, and tasks stay visible on their own pages.

Q: Do quiet hours delete notifications sent overnight? A: No. Quiet hours affect when you are disturbed, not whether something is recorded — items still appear in your notification center.

Q: Why am I still not getting a notification type I enabled? A: Your administrator may have disabled that category or channel for the whole organization or program. Check with them.
