The Notification Center

Written by Medtrics

What it does

Every signed-in user has a personal notification center that collects in-app notifications from across the platform — form assignments, schedule changes, approvals, deadlines, announcements, and more. The full page sorts everything by urgency, so items that need action show up first.

Who it's for

Everyone who signs in: learners, supervising faculty, coordinators, advisors, and administrators.

How it works

Each person sees only notifications addressed to them. The bell icon in the page header shows a badge with your unread count. Opening it previews your five most recent notifications. A view-all link takes you to the full notification center.

The full page groups notifications by urgency:

  • Overdue — the related item's due date has passed.

  • Due this week — due within the next seven days.

  • Later — actionable but not date-critical.

  • Informational — everything else.

A notification needs action when any of these are true: it links to something to do, it belongs to an actionable category (form assignment, approval request, compliance deadline), it carries a high, urgent, or critical priority, or it has a due date. Summary cards at the top count Action required, Overdue, Due this week, and Informational notifications. Select a card to filter the list to that group. Quick view buttons below switch between All, Needs action, and Informational only.

You can filter by category, priority, or unread-only. Clear filters in one click. Each row shows the title, a short body, a priority badge, how long ago it arrived, its category, any due date, and context such as the learner, program, rotation, or site it relates to. Opening a notification marks it read. If it links to something, it also takes you to that page.

Checkboxes support bulk work. Select some or all visible notifications, then mark them read, or delete them after a confirmation dialog. A mark-all-read button clears your entire unread count at once. The list loads twenty-five notifications at a time. Use the load-more button for older items.

Before you start

  • Nothing to set up — every signed-in user already has a notification center; there is no permission needed to view your own notifications.

  • You only see notifications already sent to you. If your list looks empty, nothing has been addressed to you yet.

  • Deleting is permanent from the list — mark items read instead if you might want to find them again later.

Do this

  1. Select the bell icon in the header → a preview of your five most recent notifications opens.

  2. Select view all or open the /notifications page → the full notification center page opens, grouped into Overdue, Due this week, Later, and Informational sections.

  3. To narrow the list, use the filter panel for category, priority, or unread-only, or select a summary card such as Action required → the list filters to matching notifications.

  4. Select a notification in the list view → you should return to its linked page, and the notification is marked read automatically.

  5. To handle several at once, check the boxes on the notifications you want, then select Mark as read, or select Delete and confirm Delete notifications in the dialog → the selected notifications update or disappear from the list.

  6. To clear everything at once, select Mark all as read in the header banner → your unread badge count returns to zero.

You're done when

  • ✓ The notifications you opened or selected show as read (no longer bold, no Unread badge).

  • ✓ Notifications you deleted no longer appear in the list.

  • ✓ Your unread badge count matches what you expect after marking items read.

Boundaries and limits

  • You only ever see notifications addressed to you. There is no shared or team inbox on this page.

  • Read/unread state is personal. Marking something read does not affect anyone else.

  • Deleting a notification removes it from your list permanently. There is no restore option, and it does not cancel or change the task it refers to.

  • The urgency grouping comes from the notification's own data (due dates, priority, category). It does not re-check the underlying item's current state. Complete the actual task to make the notification go away for good.

  • The header preview shows only your five most recent notifications. Use the full page for anything older.

  • Priorities are fixed levels (low, normal, high, urgent, critical) set by whatever generated the notification. Recipients cannot change them.

  • External links in notifications are safety-checked before opening. Links that fail the check do not open.

Common questions

Q: How do I clear my unread badge quickly? A: Open the notification center and use mark all read. The badge clears immediately.

Q: What does the "Action needed" badge mean? A: The notification links to something to do, is in an actionable category (like a form assignment or approval request), has elevated priority, or carries a due date.

Q: I deleted a notification — can I get it back? A: No, deletion is permanent from your list. The underlying item (for example, the assigned form) is unaffected and still reachable from its own page.

Q: Why is something showing as overdue? A: The due date attached to the notification has passed. Completing the underlying task is the right fix; the notification itself just reports the date.
