What it does
Sessions are the individual teaching units inside a course — lectures, labs, workshops, clinical activities. Each session carries a name, a unique code, a session type, a duration, and a required/optional flag, and can have faculty leaders and learning materials attached: links, readings, videos, and uploaded files.
Who it's for
Program administrators and coordinators build out course content. Faculty lead sessions and see them in their own teaching schedule once assigned as a leader. Managed in the administration portal's Curriculum workspace; enrolled learners see their sessions with materials in the personal portal.
How it works
Creating and managing sessions. Sessions are created inside a course. Each has an explicit display order within that course and can be reordered by dragging. A session can be duplicated — into the same course or a different one — with a "(Copy)" name; the copy is independent and doesn't stay in sync with the original. Sessions can be removed individually or in bulk as a soft delete.
The session side list. On wide screens, a session's detail page shows a side list of other sessions in the same course, so you can open another one without returning to the course first. A course with many sessions shows a searchable window rather than every session at once — search by name or code to find ones outside it. If the list can't load, the panel shows an error with a retry action instead of looking empty.
Materials. Two kinds attach to a session:
Resources — typed entries (reading, video, link, or file) added through the Add Resource dialog, with a title, type, URL or file, optional description, a required flag, and a display order you can rearrange.
File attachments — files uploaded directly to the session, stored securely and downloaded through short-lived signed links (about one hour). Uploads are verified against their claimed file type before being accepted.
Before you start
Open the course first — sessions are created from inside it, not from a standalone sessions list.
Know the session type you want (from your program's session type list), or leave it unset.
To add materials, the session must already be created.
Do this
Open a course and select Add Session in the toolbar → the Add Session sheet opens.
Enter a Code and a Name (both required) → the sheet accepts the code once it's unique for this program.
In the sheet's Session Type dropdown, choose a type or leave No session type → confirm your choice shows in the field.
In the same sheet, enter Duration (minutes) and an optional Description → confirm both fields show the values you typed.
In the Session leaders field of the sheet, select the faculty who should see this session in their teaching schedule → confirm their names show as chips.
In the sheet, leave Required Session on if students must attend, or turn it off for an optional session → confirm the toggle reflects your choice.
Select Add Session at the bottom of the sheet → you should return to the course with the new session in the list.
Open the session and select Add Resource in the materials panel → the Add Resource dialog opens with Title, Type, and a URL or file field.
Fill in the fields and select Add Resource in the dialog → the resource appears in the session's materials list.
You're done when
✓ The session shows in its course's session list with the code and name you set.
✓ Assigned leaders see the session in their own teaching schedule.
✓ Materials you added show in the session's materials list with the right type badge.
Boundaries and limits
Session names are limited to 255 characters and session codes to 50 characters; a session cannot be saved without a code.
File attachments are capped at 50 MB per file; files whose contents don't match their claimed type are rejected at upload.
Attachment download links expire after about an hour; re-open the material for a fresh link.
Duration cannot be negative and is capped at 1440 minutes (24 hours).
Resource entries validate their URL format; an invalid URL blocks the save.
Removing a session, individually or in bulk, is a soft removal — there's no end-user restore screen.
A session belongs to exactly one course; duplicating into another course creates an independent copy, not a shared session.
The session-detail side list is a navigation aid, not a full catalog: large courses show a searchable first window (by name and code). It doesn't support searching by session type name alone.
Common questions
Q: Can the same session appear in two courses? A: No. A session belongs to one course. You can duplicate it into another course, but the copy is independent — edits do not sync between them.
Q: What file types and sizes can I attach? A: Files up to 50 MB. The platform verifies that the file's actual contents match its claimed type, so mislabeled files are rejected.
Q: What is the difference between a resource and an attachment? A: Resources are typed catalog entries (reading, video, link, file) added through the Add Resource dialog, with descriptions, a required flag, and ordering. Attachments are direct file uploads on the session. Both are visible to people with access to the session.
Q: Who shows up as a session leader? A: Anyone from your people directory you assign under Session leaders. Leaders see their sessions reflected in their own teaching-schedule views.
