Connecting an LMS with LTI 1.3 and Grade Passback

Written by Medtrics

What it does

Institution admins register an LTI 1.3 LMS, such as Canvas, so learners can open Medtrics from an LMS link. Published grades then flow one-way from Medtrics to the LMS.

Who it's for

Institution admins set up the integration, coordinators link LMS users and map courses, and learners launch Medtrics from the LMS — a learner needs an existing, admin-linked Medtrics account before their first launch works.

How it works

You register the platform from Integrations, then link LMS user accounts to Medtrics accounts, and map LMS courses to Medtrics courses before grades can sync. Medtrics can't run inside an LMS frame, so the LMS tool must open in a new browser tab.

After first launch. The LMS's contexts show up in Medtrics — map each one to a Medtrics course so the sync knows where scores belong.

Passing grades back. Map the grade columns, publish scores in the gradebook, then select Sync Now (or wait for the next scheduled sync). Only published numeric scores with a linked LMS user are sent.

Before you start

  • You need institution-admin access to Integrations to register a platform.

  • Get the LMS issuer, client ID, deployment ID, and OIDC URLs (authorization, token, JWKS) from your LMS admin before you start.

Do this

  1. Open the /settings/integrations/lti page → the LTI 1.3 Integration section loads with an Add Platform button.

  2. Select the Add Platform button → the "Register LTI 1.3 Platform" sheet opens on the Platform Details section.

  3. Fill in the Platform Name, Issuer URL, Client ID, Deployment ID, Authorization URL, Token URL, and Platform JWKS URL fields → each field keeps your entry, and the Next button enables once all are filled.

  4. Select Next → the Authentication section shows the Medtrics Redirect URI, Login Initiation URI, and Tool JWKS URI. Copy each one into your LMS's developer key setup.

  5. Select Next → the Test Connection section shows a disabled Test Connection button (live testing isn't available yet). Select Continue without testing.

  6. Select Finish → the sheet closes and the new platform shows in the LTI Platforms list.

You're done when

  • ✓ The platform you registered shows in the LTI Platforms list.

  • ✓ A learner can open a Medtrics link from the LMS, once an admin has linked their LMS account.

  • ✓ A published, linked score reaches the LMS after Sync Now or the next scheduled sync.

Boundaries and limits

  • Grade passback is one-way. Medtrics does not import grades from the LMS.

  • Medtrics does not create new user accounts from the LMS roster. An admin must link each learner's LMS account by hand before that learner can launch.

  • Roster sync and Deep Linking aren't supported in this release.

  • Medtrics can't run inside an LMS frame — the LMS tool must open in a new browser tab.

  • Live connection testing isn't built yet. The wizard's Test Connection button is disabled; use Continue without testing and verify the setup after the LMS launch instead.

Common questions

Q: Launch says the account is not linked. What do I do? A: An admin needs to link that learner's LMS account to their Medtrics email before launch will work.

Q: Grades did not appear in the LMS. What should I check? A: Confirm the score is published, the learner's account is linked, the grade mapping is active, and Sync Now (or the next scheduled sync) has run.

Q: Can grades flow from the LMS into Medtrics? A: No. Grade passback only goes one way, from Medtrics to the LMS.

Q: Does launching from the LMS create a new Medtrics account? A: No. The learner needs an existing Medtrics account, and an admin must link it to their LMS account first.

Q: Why did my Test Connection button do nothing? A: Live connection testing isn't available yet. Select Continue without testing to finish setup, then verify the connection after the first LMS launch.
